THE TUNJUELO, SALITRE AND FUCHA RIVER SYSTEMS IN THE CITY
OF BOGOTA (Feb-96 / Feb-98)
This
Project was made for the Aqueduct Company of Bogotá
and included the hydrologic, hydraulic and geologic studies
necessary to establish zoning fringes according to the letter
of the law in order to provide an environmental zone of
protection of the urban waterways system of Bogotá.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STUDY
OF THE GOLD DREDGING OPERATION OF ATACO - TOLIMA (feb-96
/ Nov-96)
This
Project included the field and office work necessary to
present the Ministry of the Environment of Colombia with
a comprehensive report indicating the potential impacts
of a large dredge mining operation in the bed and flood
plain of the Saldaña River, one of the largest tributaries
of the Upper Magdalena Basin. This was a very controversial
Project since the Project is located in the Upper Saldaña
River and there are large irrigation districts in the lower
Saldaña that could be affected by sediment production
at the mining site. The report also indicated the ways to
minimize impacts and make the operation feasible, and permitted
the Ministry to declare the Project Technically and environmentally
feasible, after a detailed review of the report by a Canadian
Company hired to review the work previous to approval by
the Ministry. The work was done for MINEROS EL DORADO of
Medellín.

the area of influence of a mayor road reach designed to
avoid the traffic to pass by the City of Socorro, second
largest of the state of Santander in Colombia. It included
the analysis of several alternatives and the selection of
the optimal one from the Environmental point of view. It
was done by contract with the larger consulting firm CEI
Ltd. For the Ministry of Transportation of Colombia.
E.I.A. FOR THE PERIPHERAL CARTAGENA
HIGHWAY (Jan 1998)
Environmental
impact Assessment of the construction of the major road
to surround the Bay of La Virgen in Cartagena de Indias,
with a protective fringe to avoid the continuing invasion
of the bay by fill and construction from private interest
in violation of the Colombian law. It was a controversial
Project since most invaders were poor people moving into
the city with few economic resources. It included the physical
biological and social characterization of the area of influence,
the analysis of several alternatives and the selection of
the optimal alternative from the Environmental point of
view, plus the elaboration of a detailed Environmental Management
Plan for the construction and operation of the Project.
FLOOD
CONTROL PROJECT FOR THE SALAO AND PLATANAL URBAN CREEKS
IN THE CITY OF SOLEDAD - ATLANTICO (August-96 / Sep-97)
This
Project included a complete diagnosis of the flood problems
in the important peripheral urban area of Barranquilla,
Colombia’s second largest city with over two million
inhabitants. The zone is very important since it lies near
the International airport and its main access road. The
work comprised all the physical, biological and social studies,
the design of major river works, including flood diversion
channels, to alleviate the flooding problems, detailed plans
for the evacuation of a part of the population living in
the floodways, and the final plan for the drainage and wastewater
network of the urban area, including the relocation of major
roads, design of urban bridges, and the proposal of a new
route and specifications for the airport access highway.
It included also the environmental impact study and the
environmental management plans for the entire Project. Done
for FONADE, the Government’s main financial bank,
and the township of Soledad, in Barranquilla.

QUALITY FIELD MONITORING CAMPAINS, IN THE CANAL DEL DIQUE
AND ITS LAGOONS SYSTEM (Oct-99 / Ene 2001)
This
important Project was done directly for the Ministry of
the Environment in Colombia and is a part of a major project
to improve the canal del Dique, one of the major navigation
waterways in Colombia, connecting the Magdalena River basin
with the important city of Cartagena de Indias, one of Colombia’s
five larger cities. The work included the land and sea surveys
of all major river channels, the field determination of
water and sediment discharges from the river into the canal
and from it to the coastal lagoons and swamps that surround
the Canal, conforming a Deltaic system of great ecological
and economic importance in the region, and also the measurement
of water quality parameters in the entire system, and the
production of a comprehensive report to characterize the
hydrological, hydraulic and water quality situation in the
area.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STUDY
FOR THE GOLD Dredging EXPLOTATION IN EL BAGRE - ANTIOQUIA
(Feb-2000 / Jul-2000)
This
Project included the field and office work necessary to
present the Ministry of the Environment of Colombia with
a comprehensive report indicating the potential impacts
of a large dredge mining operation in the bed and flood
plain of the Nechí River and its tributaries, in
the lower Cauca-Magdalena Basin. This Project has been going
continuously since just before the beginning of the 20th
century, and started as a private U.S. undertaking. In 1974
it was bought by Miners of Antioquia, a Colombian mining
concern, and it has been operating continuously but not
without environmental problems. These problems finally required
the intervention of the Ministry of the Environment, which
ordered the elaboration of a comprehensive Environmental
Impact Study and an Management Plan in order to allow the
exploitation to continue. The Studies were dully approved
and the Project is now operating under the conditions determined
by this Plan, being one of the three largest mining operations
in Colombia, after the Cerrejón Coal Project, (largest
open pit coal mine in the world), ant the Cerromatoso Iron
and Niquel Mine. ESTUDIOS Y ASESORÍAS was also instrumental
in the Implementation of the Management plan and its supervision
along the first three years.

is a major engineering supervision work done for the Aqueduct
Company of Bogotá, along a period of three and a
half years, to control the quality and adequacy of a major
engineering effort to modernize the Master Sanitation plan
of the City of Bogotá. It included the design of
river improvements in the Bogotá River, to avoid
flooding and to allow water levels that permit adequate
drainage of the drainage basin of the city and its rainfall
sewer network, the redesign of nearly two thirds of the
city waste water mains, including the design of underground
tunnels, pumping stations and concentration of flows towards
the site of a major water treatment Plant, and the redesign
of the system of three treatment plants previously proposed,
to optimize the economic impact of the project to the city.
The company in charge of the designs is HMV S.A. a major
Civil Engineering firm and a part of a Colombian –American
consortium of companies.
SUPERVISIÓN
AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR
THE GOLD DREDGING OPERATION IN EL BAGRE - ANTIOQUIA (Mar.-2002
/ Mar.-2003)
This
was the continuation of the Project for adequate environmental
management of the MINERS OF ANTIOQUIA S.A. operation in
El Bagre, after the firm realized the E.M.P. It consisted
in the supervision of the implementation of the plan, the
creation of an environmental division within the company,
and the instruction and monitoring of performance of the
division for the first three years.
HIDRAULIC STUDY OF THE COASTAL
LAGOON OF EL TOTUMO – STATE OF ATLÁNTICO (August
2002 / Dic. 2002)
This
work was done for the regional Natural resources Corporation
of the state of Atlantic – CRA, in the Caribbean Coast
of Colombia, and for the ministry of the environment. It
consisted in the hydrologic and hydrodynamic modeling of
a major coastal lagoon in the Caribbean Coast, with the
interaction of the sea and the affluence of more than 10
tributary creeks and rivers.. It included the Sedimentological
study to prevent siltation of the lagoon, and the use of
the ELCOM hydrodynamic model of the university of Western
Australia, with whom Estudios y Asesorias has established
technological exchange ventures for these type of projects.
DESIGN OF A BY PASS STRUCTURE
FOR THE SAN RAFAEL RESERVOIR ( 2004)
The Project consisted in the design of a by pass structure
to divert the waters of the Teusacá River around
the San Rafael Reservoir; this reservoir, constructed by
damning the Teusacá River is used as a temporary
storage for the Chingaza Aqueduct that supplies 70% of the
city of Bogota´s fresh water requirements, (for a
popullation nearing ten million inhabitants). Due to the
polluted characterístics of the small river, as opposed
to the very pure mountain water brought from the Chingaza
basin in the mountains, the desition to by pass the river
waters around the reservoir had to be evaluated, and a proper
design studied to divert the waters. The design included
a diversión dam, and a 10 Km channel around the dam
to carry up to 10 cubic meters per second of discharge,
with an overflow weir towards the reservoir in case of a
greater flood than the design level. The study included
technical, economical and environmental evaluation of the
alternatives, the selection of the optimum project and final
design drawings for the construction of the optimum project..
WASTE
WATER QUALITY MONITORING PROJECT ( 2005-06)
